Rome Study Abroad
I studied History abroad in Rome for four months. This experience was incredibly eye-opening, and I learned much more than I initially expected. I went to Rome to study history up close and personal, but I also gained first-hand experience living as a minority with a minimal grasp on the language. This gave me a new perspective on my education. I was in an unfamiliar environment surrounded by people who I did not understand, which was a considerable distraction from my education. Since I've had these experiences, I now understand the importance of making each student feel at home and safe in my classroom.
In addition to living in Rome for four months, I also traveled to five other countries during my time abroad. I spent a couple weeks studying in Paris, which had a much different culture than Rome. This gave me experience with switching between multiple cultures, and the ability to learn cultural nuances in order to fit in.
Missouri River Educational Cooperative- Extended School Program
The after school program I work at has been of great value to my experience. I have gotten to experience elementary education (which, while educational, has only affirmed my choice of going into secondary education) but I have also gained experience with an underprivileded school. The school building itself is nice, but many of the students (especially the students in my after school program) are from diverse families.
